In modern times the UK law is defined by The Road Traffic Act 1988, this was last altered in 1991. The act requires that some motorists either be insured, have a security, or have made a specified deposit for damage to other persons' property resulting from use of a vehicle on a public road or in other public places.
The minimum amount of required insurance cover which is most often available that satisfies the requirement of the act is known by the term third party only insurance. The level this cover provides by Third party only insurance is really basic but it does however cover the requirements of the act.
